The Monster Maker-Gene Colan-1954

Legendary comics artist Gene Colan has sadly had rough times in his personal life in recent years and particularly in recent months but his artistic legacy is secure. Perhaps his most recent triumph was a special issue of Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA just a year or two ago. Today, we take you back 56 years to when Marvel was Atlas. This story comes from one of Atlas's three MAD rip-off comics, in this case WILD, and shows that even way back then, Gene's art was a cut above the mostly messy, Elderesque layouts in these titles.

Anyone who was surprised when Gene drew something as comic as Howard The Duck (or Archie, some years later) wouldn't have been caught off guard if they knew the side of his work seen here.
