The Vampire-Tarpe Mills-1939, 1940

Pioneering female artist Tarpe Mills is known for her MISS FURY strip but here she is doing something very different., a very early comic book horror story!

Stranger in Town-Al Williamson-Stan Lee-1955

Williamson was second only to Wood on his sci-fi tales at EC but after the Code came in, he made quite a showing of a series of western stories for Atlas. GCD says frequent collaborator Angelo Torres assists here.

Panhandle Pete and Jennifer-Bill Newton-1951

Here's a fun tall tale from a comic based on an obscure television show. Jennifer was played on TV by one Jennifer Holt, age 30. She looks much older here.

P.X.Pete-1954

This one is a pretty good knock-off of the perennial Sad Sack!

Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron-1943

Accidentally posted this one on the wrong blog last night! With a dozen of 'em, I'm surprised that hasn't happened more often. Some nifty looking hard to draw monster creatures in this one.

Electro Girl-Dennis M. Reader-1946

Reader died in 1995 and was eulogized as one of the first British cartoonists to specialize in superheroes. While many US artists used pen names for comic books, Reader was known for his "bold signature."

Mitzi-1947

In spite of the cool Frankenstein splash, this is a fun spoof of the crazy popularity actor Van Johnson had briefly in the post-war period. The SL in the job number might mean this is by Stan Lee.

Twice Alive-Bob Powell-1951

Another great Bob Powell piece. I first ran across this one when working on Craig Yoe's Powell book back in 2011. Powell died in 1967. He was still doing some fun work at the time including some unique-looking superhero stories for Marvel. Sometimes I like to imagine him on Roy Thomas's AVENGERS or even X-MEN had he lived.
