Military Madness-John Costanza-1971

Although he started out as an assistant to Joe Kubert and became best known as a letterer of some renown, John Costanza drew quite a few comics as well, often in the kids or humor fields. I always really liked his humor stuff.

Genius Jones-Alfred Bester and Stan Kaye-1943

By request, here's some early fiction from the author of THE STARS MY DESTINATION and THE DEMOLISHED MAN. GENIUS JONES ran in ADVENTURE, MORE FUN and ALL FUNNY COMICS and was revived briefly just within the past decade! Hey, Stephen! A visual influence on 'MAZING MAN, perhaps?

Powerhouse Pepper-Basil Wolverton-1947

Long before MAD, Harvey Kurtzman was honing his humor with filler at Timely. Coincidentally, so was future MAD artist Basil Wolverton and many would argue that he was already far ahead of Harvey! Here's some more gloriously goofy Powerhouse Pepper!

Flossie-Joe Palooka Comics-1947

Not much here and we don't even know who did this Harvey filler but since it looks and reads as though it's a rip-off of radio's BABY SNOOKS whom we posted about yesterday, I thought I'd share it.

Fannie Brice-Doc Savage Comics-1943

The panels not traced from publicity photographs are pretty bad in this bio-strip of Fanny (misspelled throughout as "Fannie) Brice. The singer/actress's story was better told in the musical play FUNNY GIRL, its film version and its sequel, FUNNY LADY. Both shows, however, tend to gloss over her decade-plus run as radio's Baby Snooks. Here, that character is highlighted. Snooks and her on-air interactions with her long-suffering "Daddy" (actor Hanley Stafford) could be hilarious but much of the time the character just came across as vaguely creepy, especially in all the stills of Brice dressed as a little girl menace.

Star-Spangled Kid and the Shining Knight-Part Five of Seven-1944

Sir Justin had a successful retro-revival in Roy Thomas's ALL-STAR SQUADRON more than 3 decades later. Meanwhile, the Kid turned up Gerry Conway's revived JSA strip and was later co-opted by Roy for INFINITY INC.

Stripesy and Wing-Part Four of Seven-1944

As ever when dealing with this type of thing, please excuse Wing. He wasn't bad, he was just drawn (and written) that way,
