Who'll Die Tomorrow?-Charles Nicholas/Wayne Howard-1973
Veteran artist Charles Nicholas is credited with pencils here but they're pretty much overwhelmed by the strongly Wallace Wood-influenced inks of Wayne Howard, Woody's one-time assistant for a brief period.
I so adore Howard's work. While many people tend to character him as an imitator, I see him as taking Woody's style and making it his own.His own personal style shines through the Woody influences, and quite beautifully. Add to that the fact that he was the first ever artist/writer/creator to get a "created by" blurbs on the covers of his comics (Tales Of The Mysterious Traveler)--AND the fact that he was an African-American in a predominantly white field, well...that's really saying something!
