Master Mystic-Green Giant Comics-1939

We're back down to only three colors here but the art (by yet another artist forgotten to time), is too strikingly odd and cool not to post it! This is from the semi-legendary GREEN GIANT COMICS, brought to you by Funnies, Inc., the shop that also created the mega-controversial MOTION PICTURE FUNNIES WEEKLY # 1 as well as the contents of MARVEL COMICS #1.

The large panels and moncochromatic color scheme are really unusual for the time. The color was probably a cost-cutting measure, but it still looks cool.

Also odd to see a story where the "hero" wears a hood and uses psychic powers, which are usually something villains have a monopoly on. Also gotta wonder if the tower inspired Dr. Fate.

Really beautiful!!! The colossus melting in the second before last panel almost looks like a tip of the hat to Max and Moritz. Thanks a lot for this.

Love it, wonder if it is written by Gardner Fox. So much of Dr. Fate elements in it!! mr. 100aliases is right!

Hey, this is really a great looking comic! Simple, with a lot of flair! It's a lot less stiff than the rest of the stories in the title. I suspect the artist was a more seasoned pro. Any idea who he was, or at least any other stories that seem to be by the same anonymous hand?

Hard to be a seasoned pro by that point since everything was still so new but I get what you mean. Reminds me a bit of early Paul Gustavson but no idea really.

Perhaps he was a cartoonist or illustrator in a medium other than comic books, and this was just a side gig. There's a certain confidence in that loose brush work. Anyhow, thanks for posting it.
