Hawkman-Sheldon Moldoff-1943

Sheldon Moldoff is arguably the most underrated man in comic book history. Not only did he use his Alex Raymond/photo swipe style on HAWKMAN and other series but he was, for all intents and purposes, "Bob Kane" and even, according to some evidence, suggested the concept of horror comics to Bill Gaines at EC!

Steve; I think you're mashing up (maybe) creating horror comics and Moldoff doing Moon Girl at EC to come up with the idea that he suggested the idea to Gaines. My recollection is that Moldoff actually did a few issues of some horror book around the time ACG did the first one. ACG's was far milder than EC's, Moldoff much closer to what EC ended up doing.

I recently read an interview with Moldoff where he said flat out that he thought horror comics could be big and when Bill G. found himself stuck with his dad's publishing company, Moldoff pushed him into trying them. Now, that was HIS spin so who knows? Not only does memory play weird tricks but one always tries to make one's self look best when telling old war stories.
