Fresh Up Freddie-7 Up-1957-1959

Not exactly comics, these back cover ads featured 7 Up TV spokesbird Fresh Up Freddie in some nicely done TV-style commercials (note the panel shape). Freddie was actually a Disney character and was popular enough for awhile to have merchandising including dolls and pin-back buttons! Does advertising work? I don't know. I always enjoyed 7 Up's commercials...but I've never drank any of their product. Do they still MAKE 7 up even?

Do they still make 7-Up? My friend, you really need to get out more.

Dang, are those the Beagle Boys?

I don't want to play bitch-artist over some poor forgotten cartoon pitchman, but whether it's the ads above or the commercials found on YouTube, poor Freddie was clearly too blah to survive for long.

"Hi! I'm Fresh-Up Freddie! And my shtick is having the name, 'Fresh-Up Freddie!' I'm happy, but not particularly crazy-manic or anything, and I suck at my job, whatever it may be. It's kinda depressing, but I don't show it, even when I'm dying in an explosion. I also don't know when to shut up. Maybe they should call me 'Shut-Up Freddie' AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! ...Sorry. Sorry. Nothing puts a smile on my otherwise nondescript face like a bottle of Mountain De--whoops, I mean 7-Up!"
