Automan is one of DC's "forgotten heroes" who appeared in the various SF/mystery comics during the mid-sixties superhero boom, Animal Man being the most famous eventually. His resemblance to The Doom Patrol character Robotman no doubt worked against him. Bob Haney wrote this story.
