Hap Hopper-Jack Sparling-1940

Here's a black and white special. This is the first story of HAP HOPPER as drawn for the newspapers by Jack Sparling. As a kid, I saw Sparling's art everywhere but it always seemed rushed and I rarely cared much for it. Here in this early work, one can see the immense talent he had and his great skill with expressions.

Referring to Dell's Space Man and The Cat (the movie, not the TV show), I know what you mean when you say Sparling's art looked rushed. As a little kid I found his characters, not only the villains, to look grim and frightening. Like some of my father's friends from work (he was a plumber, if you know construction workers). I didn't know Sparling was capable of doing better than this. Now I don't believe Fraccio/Tallarico's art was rushed (they may have done Raggedy Ann); on the other hand I think it was the best they could do.
