The MLJ (Archie) line of comics was the very first to feature a star-spangled, patriotic hero with the Shield who pre-dated even the more famous Captain America. A lesser known but once quite popular follow-up character from MLJ was CAPTAIN FLAG, created by Joe Blair in 1941. He was more or less raised on a mountain peak by an eagle who becomes his sidekick. The Captain would take over the cover of MLJ's flagship title, BLUE RIBBON COMICS, from MISTER JUSTICE and was later revived in the sixties camp craze.
