Horror in the Moonlight-Bill Everett-1952

From yesterday's ridiculous to today's sublime. Bill Everett is well-known to have suffered from various health and substance abuse issues for years but there was never a point I saw where it showed in his work. His horror stories were EC quality even though he never worked for that company!

Red River-Lee Sherman-1948

We haven't had one of these in a while now! Yet another candidate for the WORST drawn comic book story EVER! At some point, we need to set up a competition and solicit votes! 

Goliath and the Barbarians-1960

Here's a 1960 UK comics adaptation of the 1959 Steve Reeves Italian peplum movie of the same name but seriously, doesn't it look like it would be right at home a dozen or so years later in Marvel's SAVAGE TALES? At least if Goliath didn't have that oh-so neat coiffure! 

You Show Me Your Dream, I'll Show You Mine-Jim Starlin/Mike Ploog-1972

Here's a Bronze Age curio. Newcomer Jim Starlin inked by another newcomer, Mike Ploog! Is this the only time that happened? The story has Starlin's signature hooded death imagery (although written by Steve Skeates). Some great uncredited color work, too!

The Love Story to End All Love Stories-Al Feldstein-1950

Wow! A MAD-style story before MAD! This was EC before it became classic EC. Technically, it was Tiny Tot Publications and herein we meet Mr. T. Tot himself, the erstwhile publisher! As we would in later sci-fi and horror stories, we also meet Bill Gaines and artist Al Feldstein! I am drawing a blank, however on "P.K." at the end. Anyone?

Tiger Man-John Celardo-1947

Tiger Boy is often trotted out as one of the weirdest comic book heroes. Here, though, we see the unrelated Tiger Man by future TARZAN artist John Celardo. The PDSH site describes him better than I ever could:

"Lt. Robert Benton, a.k.a. Tiger Man, was an athletic private eye who offered to help anyone who dials T-I-G-E-R M-A-N for free. He advertised for his detective services every way he could and his office was called the Tigers Den. Tiger Man had many vehicles such as a Tiger-Plane, Tiger-Car and boat. He was aided by Pali, his Pakistani valet. He had no superpowers. He possessed a ring that glowed with light whenever in the presence of danger. Whenever Tiger Man was very angry, an image of a large tiger appears behind him."

The Most Hated Man in the World-Joe Sinnott-1953

More proof--not that any was needed-- that when Joe Sinnott became Marvel's best inker, the comics world lost one heck of a penciler!
