Barney Google & Snuffy Smith-Fred Fredericks-1964

Barney Google had been almost completely absent from the comic strip that still bore his name (albeit in smaller print) by the time this one-off Gold Key comic appeared with art by Mandrake artist Fred Fredericks, giving it an odd feel all around.

My mom (who played the piano and organ) used to sing the song "Barney Google (with the Goo-Goo-Googly Eyes)". I was about four or five, and loved the song, although I probably didn't ever see the strip itself until I was in my twenties.

However, Google was present in the 50 Snuffy TV cartoons King Features rolled out the previous year, which could possibly explain his presence here.

That is some incredibly unattractive artwork. Makes me appreciate Fred Lasswell all the more.
