The Girl Who Won the Miss Young America Contest-Gene Colan-1965

Lots of romance comic cross promotion in this one, and even a cameo by an issue of MAD! The whole thing is brought to you by Gene Colan, right around the time he was moonlighting for Marvel as "Adam Austin."

NEWSSTAND OWNER: "Officer, there's the young lady that's always reading my comics without paying!"
COP: "Which one?"
NEWSTAND OWNER: (pointing) "That Girl!" [Freeze frame. Begin opening credits]

Man, couldn't Gene Colan handle just about any genre? I read he would start drawing without reading the whole script, though, which must have been especially troublesome Marvel-style. Despite my great appreciation of P. Craig Russell, I think the best-looking issue of War of the Worlds was the Colan one, but it sure was rushed at the end. I guess he was better off with something short like this.

By the way, were Mad Magazine & DC already owned by the same corporation at this point? Based on this story, I would imagine 'yes', but I had the impression that was later.

I think it was in the early '70s that Steve Ross' Kinney Services (a chain of parking garages and funeral homes) acquired EC, DC, and Warner Bros.

Hey, thanks for the information!

I was a little surprised & it pushed me to do a little Internet searching of my own, which basically lines up with what you say.
