Lone Ranger wannabes were almost as prevalent as Archie wannabes and include this one from the company that would eventually BECOME Archie! Frank Volp is the artist here. Before and after WWII, Volp was a pulp artist. It was only during the war, before he himself was drafted, that he worked in comic books.

That is truly the Sombrero from Another World! I am surprised that "the company that would eventually become Archie" did not realize that there was already a "Little Joe," a fairly popular, bizarre Orphan Annie-esque Sunday strip, a strip that also seemed to be from another world.
Then it's a wonder that the hero wasn't named "The Yellow Kid"!
