A Medal For Go Buggy 3!-Howard Purcell-1964

Prolific for two and a half decades at DC, here we see Howard Purcell with a typically smooth art job on an impressive back up story that GCD says he wrote as well. Oddly, he is perhaps best remembered for a one-off Black Knight story (and its accompanying poster) he did for Marvel later in the 1960s.

Although it eventually became indistinguishable from any other Archie comic, the long-running LAUGH was, even into the 1960s, an anthology title, and in its pages one would sometimes find superheroes between Li'l Jinx and Archie!

Peabody's Improbable History-1977

Mr. Peabody is drawn uncharacteristically tall in this fun story. By the time this saw print, the cartoons had been off the air in new episodes for nearly 15 years but reruns were still all over the country.

This obscure manic strip from Plastic Man's pappy features a rare instance of comic book nudity! It hails form Crack Comics whose main feature was Captain Triumph, thus the joke in the last panel.

The Man Who Lost His Nerve-Al Williamson-1955

Back in the early '70s, when I first discovered fandom, Al Williamson was so revered that the fanzine RBCC ran a regular column called THE WILLIAMSON COLLECTOR. These days, poor Al seems largely forgotten except by older fans. A shame as his influential work still stands out from the more pedestrian stories in the mags in which his work appeared.
