What's that? You thought Bullwinkle was the first moose ever to have his own comic book stories. Nah! Here's Mopey Moose about 15 years before Bullwinkle and Rocky appeared on the nations' TV screens. Not sure what that bluebird's about to do in the splash panel. 

Sheriff Corky-Rube Grossman-1949

Hard to believe there were so many scores of funny animal series that are just forgotten today. One of the acknowledged--at least now--kings of the form was Rube Grossman, best known for his annual Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer comics.

The Fighting Parson-Jon Small-1946

"Jack Ross" was actually British-born artist Jon Small according to GCD. Small is best known for his work on DC's STAR SPANGLED KID and Fawcett's BULLETMAN. I'll take their word for it but his style here reminds me a lot of Mort Meskin and George Roussos.

Junie Prom-Harvey Eisenberg (?)-1943

The exuberant art on this also-ran distaff Archie may or may not be by Harvey Eisenberg who became legendary later on for his work in animation, particularly with Hanna-Barbera.

Marvel Boy-Bob Oksner-1943

Correct me if I'm wrong but thus goofy looking version may be one of the few characters the House of Ideas has never revived...yet anyway. 

Ibis the Invincible-Bob Hebberd-1943

Have we had Ibis here before. I don't believe we have and that's been a mistake. Ibis the Invincible was one of the longest running and most successful of the Golden Age wizards of comics.

Yet another "Son of Mandrake." I swear, I should write a book.
