The Clippers-Irwin Hasen-1945

Best known for his work on the DC/All-American line and later his DONDI comic strip, I stand by my contention that his humor strips were actually his most fully realized work.

I haven't seen much of Hasen's humor work, but based on this example I'd have to agree with you.

It took a few pages before I realized those were mustaches, not very strange mouths.

The last bit of work by Hasen that I'm aware of is the two-page illustration for Steven Spielberg's introduction in Heavy Metal's adaptation of his dud 1941. (Although far too X-rated to be filmed at the time, the comic is far more hilarious and satirical than the movie could ever pray for.)
