The Shanghai Chicken-Wally Wood-1950

Some early Wally Wood here. GCD says it's all Woody pencils and inks. I disagree. Except for the splash page, it looks to me like someone else's pencils and Wood's inking. Harry Harrison, maybe?

And yes it's very hard to believe that this story was by the same artist who did the cover art below for EC just about two and a half years later!

The Jaguar-John Rosenberger-1961

The Jaguar was an early reaction to the DC and by then Marvel (FF at least) superhero revival from Archie. Although never sophisticated, his adventures--mostly, as here, written by Atlas vet Robert Bernstein, were passable fun and mad at least rudimentary efforts at establishing a continuity. Unsure why he went away and wasn't added to the company's Mighty Crusaders group, though (although this was remedied in the '80s revival). Some lovely if unspectacular art throughout the series from John Rosenberger.

Feat Treat-Mad House-1979

With all this talk of the villainous Purple Man in the new JESSICA JONES Netflix series, let us not forget that there was ANOTHER Purple Man...for a few panels, anyway. This 1979 story feels like a reprint from an earlier time to me but I wasn't able to place it. Logically, I'd say mid to late sixties.

Hoppy the Marvel Bunny-Chad Grothkopf-1945

Normally the Hoppy stories didn't specifically go after parodying specific Captain Marvel stories or characters but here's a rather obvious funny animal version of Black Adam.

Archie-The Interpreter-1960

Here's an unusually serious Archie story about an issue that still is in the news these days. I think I know who the artist is on this one but not enough to go on record with it.

Pedro the Peril-M. Fred-1942

Political incorrectness anyone? Here's a story that's loaded with it but the name "Jose Canusi" in the first panel made me LOL and the artwork by M. Fred is so wonderfully stylish and stylized that it doesn't deserve to stay buried forever.

Hector the Specter-Funny Films-1953

Ghosts were really big in comics in the early fifties--both in horror comics and in comic comics! Here's yet another example of the latter, a lesser known spook in the four color pantheon that includes Casper, Spooky, Timmy, Homer, and Spencer!
