The Phantom of Philip Hawks-AC Hollingsworth-1952

One of the more unjustly forgotten comics artists of yore is AC Hollingsworth, one of the few African-American creators in the business in his day. Here, from Avon's 1952 DIARY OF HORROR, is an insignificant ghost story that becomes something amazing due to Hollingsworth's illustrations and storytelling. I see traces of the styles of Krigstein, Toth, Wood and others but in most cases, Hollingsworth is here utilizing them first! He went on to do covers and cartoons for various "men's sweat" mags and later became a fine artist. He died a decade ago just as his work began to get more recognition from fandom.
