I always think of artist Richard Doxsee as the one who got away. He wasn't quite up to the EC level but he was well beyond the standard level for comics artists of the day. Given time, he might have progressed even further but his work stopped appearing by the early sixties.
Based on his work for Cracked and other satire magazines I have determined that he was also the artist of the daily and Sunday feature Let's Explore Your Mind between 1954 and 1963. In 1954 he was a fresh student and I think we should see his work for Timely/Atlas as that of a young man trying to find a voice of his own. I don;t know where he went, bu my guess is advertising.
