Here's a bizarre little tale from St. John with some good art by yet another anonymous artist. This time, though, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it seems to me to be the work of Win Mortimer. Mortimer was working at DC at the time as well as on the SUPERMAN newspaper strip and yet...Wouldn't be the first time someone moonlighted for a few extra bucks. A number of the faces and poses throughout this story strike me as Mortimer's stock faces and poses although the scratchier inks may be someone else. That said, I get an Angelo Torres vibe from some panels, also, so I won't say it's definite;y Mortimer. Experts?
Weird story, all right... but it's supposedly true!
ReplyDeleteFour thousand pieces of eight would have been slightly more than four thousand US silver dollars. (The US dollar was a weight of silver equal to a sample average of pieces of eight found in circulation in America. These were very worn, compared to new pieces of eight.) We're talking about an implausibly large pension.
