Pinky Lee-Morris Weiss-1955

Pinky Lee was a lisping, mincing burlesque comic who reinvented himself without changing one bit as a lisping, mincing children's show host when TV came around, only to be back in the nostalgic burlesque revivals 20 years after that! During his TV heyday, marvel cashed in by giving him his own comic book.

Dick Storm in China-Mort Meskin-1939

This story is full of cliches but wonderfully illustrated by the young stylist Mort Meskin. Meskin would sadly suffer some personal setbacks but become highly influential in comics.

Tommy the Time Traveler-Thurston Harper-1944

This funny and well-drawn piece with its blonde Cleopatra is credited to Thurston Harper, an animator who worked for the pre-Mickey Disney and later on Fleischer's GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. He would also do some humor work for DC.

Douglas Fairbanks-Stookie Allen-1946

I noticed the other day there's a new book out about Douglas Fairbanks.It's good to see he's still remembered. This little comics bio came only 6 years after he passed and about 15 years after his retirement.

The Eavesdropper-Gil Kane/Wayne Howard-1973

Wayne Howard adopted all the tropes of his mentor Wally Wood but never went on to develop a style of his own. This irritated Wood no end. Here's Wayne, though, with inks over Gil Kane pencils, just like Woody did from time to time a year or three earlier...only notably NOT as good a match. The script here is credited by GCD to Don Kraar who would later work with Gray Morrow on TARZAN.

Hamilton and Eggbert-All Funny Comics-1947

The dialogue is terrible and punctuation seems to be missing in spots but the whole thing has some cute art and plays like an elaborate slapstick comedy short.

Who Dunnit?-Dick Briefer-1944

Frankenstein specialist Dick Briefer also had a CRIME DOES NOT PAY series of semi-humorous whodunits. This one seems almost to see the artist mimicking Will Eisner in spots.

TNT and Dan the Dyna-Mite-Louis Cazeneuve-1942

With the rock group AC-DC in the news recently, one of their songs, TNT, got stuck in my head. Wonder if it was inspired by this duo?
