Inspector Willoughby-1962

I've seen this cartoon character, promoted by Walter Lantz in the late 1950s and early 1960s, described as a sort of human version of MGM's Droopy. Works.

The Nearsighted Mister Magoo-1963

Mix Cinderella, Barnaby, and a dash of Madmen, then throw in the now politically incorrect Magoo and you might get close to this wonderfully wacky sixties nonsense with some splendid if unidentified artwork.

Running For Love-Kurt Schaffenberger-1972

Some artists flit back and forth between companies and others spend most if not all of their careers in one spot. Inker Frank Giacoia, for example, worked at Marvel and DC. Robert Kanigher, on the other hand, pretty much never left DC. Ditto artist Kurt Scheaffenberger, who popped up at several publishers before settling in at Fawcett and, after their demise, DC (and ACG but that's another story). Thus, what we have here is more or less a DC romance story...from Marvel!

Margaret O'Brien-Nat Edson-1946

Here's little Margaret, THE child star of the 1940s, getting her own bio and film promo piece. Margaret O'Brien is still with us today and has appeared in recent years on STU'S SHOW! Artist Nat Edson had moved into comic books from newspaper strips and continued to work on low profile comics projects until the early 1970s.

I Don't Believe in Ghosts-Jack Kirby-1961

This is one of my all-time favorite splash pages, drawn by Jack Kirby right around the same time he did the first FANTASTIC FOUR issues. There's even an FF plug at the end! For many years, this was the earliest comic book I owned.

Bombshell-Norman Maurer-1942

This pint size proto-Son of Vulcan is actually, "Bombshell, Son of War," illustrated by the great Norman Maurer, whose career in comics might be better remembered if he hadn't left the field for a couple decades to manage the career of his son-in-law Moe Howard and the 3 Stooges!

VR Troopers-Steve Ditko-1996

Steve Ditko hasn't done much mainstream comics work in recent decades although he has continued to come out with his personal projects. Here, from 20 years back now, is one of his last mainstream strips.
